1. Workers reject new NHIF rates
New NHIF rates have been met by threat of strike by workers opposed to the decision. According to Central Organization of Trade Unions, secretary general, Mr Atwoli Francis, Cotu will be revealing the forces and the motive behind the minister’s obsession in a week's time.
2. Mining firm raises stakes in search of Gold
Interest in gold mining in Rachuonyo district, Western province, has been raised as East Africa Pure Gold seeks special license. The area of interest has been reopened to prospecting and mining and anyone opposed to the granting of the special license has 1 month to file their complaint.
3. NOKIA launches smartphone amidst downgrade
The Nokia 808 PureView camera, with HDMI and Wi-Fi technology was recently launched in Kenya. The company's market share has been declining with smartphones from other manufacturers flooding the market.
4. KRA cash-bond demands may strain Ugandan businesses
The Kenya Revenue Authority recently decided to demand for cash bonds (maybe equivalent to the value of the import) instead of maintaining insurance bonds.
5. Elections will be on March 4th
The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) has confirmed that the general elections will be held on 4th March 2013. Mr Hassan, the chairman of IEBC, has dismissed the notion to have them held in August 2013 have been dismissed.
6. Occupy Wallstreet Anniversary
The New York Stock Exchange will today be surrounded by protesters who will be linking arms and sitting. The protesters aim to highlight issues like the presence of corporate money in politics and that things have gotten worse over the year that has passed.
7. Safaricom staff share owners face declined prices
Permanent employees who purchased shares in 2010 at KES 5.40 have been facing prices below KES 4.oo for the most since 2011. With the shares dipping back to the KES 3 range, the employees might be hurt when they take up the company's offer.
8. Sugar free cola now in market
Coke zero, as it shall be called, retains the same ingredients as Coca-cola except for one thing.It has been made safe for drinking with non-nutritive sweeteners. The sizes available in the market: 500ml and 1 litre, retailing at KES 55 and 75 respectively.
