1. JSC Defend Move to Buy Luxury Cars

The Judicial Service Commission (JSC) has defended its decision to acquire 40 limousines for judges

The commission also dismissed a car loan scheme offered by the government for judicial officers as untenable.

It further claimed that relevant authorities had sanctioned the purchase of the fuel guzzling S350 Mercedes Benz valued at more than Sh14 million for Chief Justice Willy Mutunga.

2. Kenyan Mother Names Kids Barack and Mitt

A Kenyan mother has named her twin babies Barack and Mitt after giving birth on the day of the US Election.

Millicent Owuor, 20, gave birth yesterday close to the village of Kogelo where President Obama's father was born.

As she was preparing to deliver her babies, the village was celebrating Obama's reelection, spurring her to name them after Obama and his unsuccessful Republican challenger.

3. How New Voter List will be Made

A biometric voter registration (BVR) kit can register a voter within five minutes even if a person has deformities.

The kit includes a laptop, two batteries, a fingerprint sensor, two flask disks and a webcam for taking the applicant’s image.

The kits, delivered to the electoral commission last week. They were supplied by French company Safran Morpho. According to the firm’s ICT expert Mwesigwe Mwendwa, only people who will be registering for the first time will be required to provide all their details.

4. Kenya Becoming a Favourite for UAE Tourists

UAE residents jetting into Kenya on their jolly jaunts soared a staggering 89.6% for the first eight months of 2012.

Unsurprisingly, that’s Kenya’s largest growth increase of any international holiday market - and lifts the UAE into the country’s ‘Top 10’ visitor list of nations for the first time.

5. Kenya Upgrades Key Road to Boost trade With Ethiopia

Kenyan President Mwai Kibaki on Wednesday launched a construction of a key road linking the country to Ethiopia which will have a big impact on the wider East Africa region in terms of trade and regional integration.

Kibaki said the 176 million US dollar Turbi-Moyale Road will also enhance trade between the two countries, open up Northern Kenya for more trade and business and contribute to an increase in the volume of Ethiopian goods transiting through the port of Mombasa.

6. Nairobi Water Turns to Survey Technology in War on Theft

Nairobi Water and Sewerage Company (NWSC) has turned to technology to help clean up its customer records, clamp down on illegal connections and reduce the mountain of unpaid bills running into billions of shillings.

The water firm has contracted Geomaps Africa — a local surveying and mapping company — to, over the next two months, collect consumer information, meter location and model showing serial number and establish whether the meter user is domestic or commercial.

7. Kenya Likely to Face Fuel Shortage

Fuel shortage is looming in areas serviced by independent dealers who source their supplies from multinational wholesalers. This follows a decision by their distributors to withdraw their services due to what they termed as harassment by city authorities.

Kenya independent petroleum distributors association chair Joseph Karanja says the move follows a directive by the city council of Nairobi to start charging every truck parking along the depot space KES 2000 on a daily basis.

8. Google Kenya Launches Bid to Promote Innovation

Google Kenya has launched a campaign to promote innovation and development of local content in key sectors of the country’s economy.

The tech giant is bringing together over 500 tech players this week from advertising and government agencies, developers, publishers and Swahili language experts to discuss ‘the role technology will play in Kenya’s future by driving growth and innovation.’
