Nairobi and its environs were hit by a fuel shortage despite assurances by the industry that there were enough supplies for the long weekend.
Most filling stations in the city centre ran out of petrol but had plenty of diesel.

Out of the 11 petrol stations the Nation team visited on Monday, only two had both petrol and diesel, with one of them being outside the city centre.

Workers at most of the outlets said they ran out of petrol early in the morning.

One of the outlets that had petrol was selling the commodity at Sh99.09 a litre while the other was selling it at Sh100.50.

Motorists raised the alarm as they fear the commodity would continue to become scarce.

The cost of petrol has been on the rise, with the prices hitting the Sh100 mark in both Nairobi and Mombasa.

Apart from the lack of petrol, Kiambu town also ran out of kerosene. Many motorists were forced to park their vehicles.

The town has five main fuel stations, including Shell, Total, Oilibya and Kenol Kobil. None of them had petrol and kerosene.

An attendant at Shell said they had faced the shortage of petrol for a whole week while Kenol Kobil and Oilibya had it until Saturday.

“All fuel stations in the town only have diesel. For a whole week we have had no petrol and we do not know what the problem is.

“The Oilibya petrol station had it until Saturday,” said a Shell BP attendant who identified himself as Mr Moses Kuria.

Mr Joseph Kamau, a matatu driver plying the Kiambu /Nairobi route, said that the commodity was only available at a Shell petrol station at Ridgeways and it was being sold at Sh111, with many motorists queuing for it.
