Government Signs Deal For Solar, Diesel Power Generation Plants

The government of Kenya on Saturday signed agreements with Chinese firms for development of new power production plants in Kenya. The agreements signed in Nanchang, China include a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with China Jiangxi Corporation for International Economic and Technical Cooperation to develop a solar and diesel engine power plant in Kenya.

Development of the solar power grid, the diesel power plant, exploitation of geothermal power and other sources of energy is part of the country's goals to achieving Vision 2030. Exploitation of these sources of energy is expected to increase supply of power to the national grid thus increasing reliance and reducing the cost of electricity for consumers. Currently, Kenya Power supplies about 1,250 Megawatts a year to the national grid against a demand of 1,700 Megawatts, the deficit accounting for the seasonal outages experienced in the country.

The deals which were signed during Prime Minister Raila Odinga's tour of the East Asian Nation also saw agreements for a concessional loan for the construction of several roads in the Homa Bay, Migori and Narok Counties signed.

Prime Minister Raila Odinga also presented to the Governor of Jiangxi Province of China the power plant agreement with the Government of Kenya, signed in Nairobi on 16 July.
