The City Council of Nairobi has given land rates defaulters seven extra working days to August 30th to clear their debts. This comes just after expiry of the previous extension period which was due on August the 21st 2012. City Hall says Kenyans made frantic requests for the deadline to be extended once more. Mayor John Aladwa said that this came after consultations with the Local Government Ministry, the Town Clerk and councillors.
There were also property owners on mortgage who were not aware that they needed to pay rates thus their requisition to the council to have more time to settle their dues. Others were already gearing up to block the council from auctioning their properties since they claimed that the council had not been giving them notices.
The council through mayor John Aladwa also announced its intention to partner with KRA in the rates collection exercise. However, this is the second attempt by the city council of Nairobi to have KRA collect land rates on its behalf after a similar attempt in 2005 flopped. Should the partnership with KRA exhibit success, City Hall says it will be capable of tracing the defaulter to their doorstep.
