Bharti Airtel partners with Sanlam, one of South Africa’s leading financial providers. The mobile phone service provider has announced that it will be using its East, West and South African reach to help the insurer distribute its services.

2. Relief for Borrowers as Central Bank Cuts Rates Again

The Central Bank‘s Monetary Policy Committee yesterday announced a reduction in the base lending rate (Central Bank Rate) by 350 points to 13% down from 16.5%, a rate set in July. This is a welcome move for borrowers as banks are expected to lower interest rates they charge on loans. Commercial banks peg their lending rates on the CBR.

4. Kenya Spends KES 25 Million on a Second Port

The Kenyan government has agreed with oil-rich South Sudan to build a 2,000-kilometer (1,243-mile) pipeline to the northern Kenyan coastal town of Lamu. Early-stage construction began in March to clear the way for a deepwater port that will serve Kenya’s underdeveloped north, SouthSudanEthiopia and Uganda.

Kenya is seeking a safe way of disposing of electronic waste that is likely to flood the country after the planned switch-off of fake mobile phones on September 30. According to the National Environment Management Authority (Nema), the country does not have the resources needed to handle the expected flow of fake electronics.
