Stocks We Are Watching Today

Here are the shares we will be closely watching in today’s trading at the Nairobi Securities Exchange:

See a summary of yesterday’s share trading here.

  • CFC Stanbic Rights – The rights were the top gainers at the stock market yesterday, gaining 26.32 percent to close at KES 6.00 per right from KES 4.75 previously. The rights have been trading since last Wednesday and are set to trade until the 8th of October. CFC Stanbic Holdings is carrying out the rights issue to raise 4 billion shillings to expand CFC Stanbic Bank (the company’s main subsidiary) by issuing 121,637,427 new shares at a discount price of KES 33.00 compared to the KES 42.50. We expect the rights to edge up further this week and will observe how they trade.
  • Williamson Tea Kenya – This month has seen shares fall 9.3 percent from KES 225 down to an 11 month low of KES 200 where they closed last week. Yesterday the shares however appeared to be on the upside, gaining 2 percent to close at KES 204. We will watch to see if they move closer back to the year’s trading range between 250 and 300 shillings per share.
  • British American Investments – Shares in the financial services group which last week officially adopted the unified Britam brand closed yesterday at their highest price in one year at KES 6.10 per share. The shares were listed on the stock market through an IPO in September last year at an initial price of KES 9.00 but quickly dropped throughout late last year into early this year with a low of KES 3.69 in March before rising to trade above KES 5 since May. This month the share has gained 8 percent from KES 5.65 most likely buoyed by the rebranding exercise. We will watch to see it the share goes beyond yesterday’s closing high.
