Mobile money transfer subscriptions grew by 12.13% from 17.3 million recorded at the end of the financial year 2010/11 to 19.5 million at the end of the 2011/12 financial year. This is according to a recent statistics report by the Communication Commission of Kenya (CCK). During the fourth quarter of the financial year 2011/2012, there was a 2.73% growth in mobile money transfer service subscriptions, from 18.98 million recorded the previous quarter to 19.5 million during the quarter under review.
Mobile money transfer services also continued to create employment opportunities across the country. At the end of fourth quarter of 2011/2012, there were 49,079 active mobile money transfer service agents compared to 45,861 recorded in the previous quarter and 42,313 posted at the end of the previous year. This represents a quarterly and an annual growth of 7.02% and 15.99% respectively.
The total deposits handled during the period under review grew by 4.0% from 185.36 billion recorded during the previous period to 192.73 billion recorded during the period under review. The annual growth in the total deposits grew by 38.1% from 486.84 billion deposited in the 2010/11 financial year to 672.30 billion deposited during the 2011/12 financial year.
