Fuel Prices On the Rise

Pump prices have risen, according to the Energy Regulatory Commission (ERC). The regulator has adjusted the cost of fuel amid the recent increase in international crude oil prices and the shilling’s weaker performance against the dollar.

Super Petrol went up by KES 6.31 to KES 115.26 per litre. Diesel jumped about 5% to KES 106.11 per litre, while Kerosene increased by KES 6.36 to KES 86.01 per litre.

This comes after the ERC reported that the price of Murban crude oil was up 9.7% to USD 111.65 (9500) per barrel from USD 101.75 (KES 8600) per barrel between July and August 2012. The Abu Dhabi National Oil Company (ADNOC) later stated that the Free On Board price of Murban crude oil also jumped to USD 115.40 (KES 9800) per barrel in September from USD 111.65 (KES 9500) in August.

During the same period, Super Petrol, Diesel and Kerosene posted a 3%, 7% and 10% increase in barrel prices respectively.

The ERC notes that the purpose of fuel pricing regulations is to cap the pump prices of products which  are already in the country so that importation as well as other incurred costs are recovered while still ensuring that the consumer receives reasonable prices.
