1. Kenya Clears KES 4.4 Billion Arrears at The UN

Kenya has entered the United Nations roll of honour after being named as one of the UN member states which have cleared all their outstanding dues. Out of 193 countries, only 31 were fully paid up as of October 11. During the 2012-2013 UN financial year, Kenya paid over Sh4.3 billion as its contribution to the regular budget. Under-Secretary-General Yukio Takasu paid tribute to Kenya, saying the fulfilment of her financial obligations in its entirety is a clear indication of its commitment to the virtues espoused by the global organisation.

3. NSE Earns Investors 6 Billion in One Week

Improved earnings of listed companies and expectations of low interest rates have put the Nairobi Securities Exchange (NSE) on a bullish run with the main market index extending a 16-month high on Tuesday. The NSE 20-share index reached 4,032.41 points, adding 2.92 points to the close on Monday when it crossed the 4,000 points mark for the first time since June 14 last year. Total investor wealth — as measured by market capitalisation — rose by KES 296.23 billion at yesterday’s closing level of KES 1.16 trillion, a leap of 34.12 per cent from KES 868.24 billion as at the beginning of the year.

4. Orengo Sets Higher Valuation Fees for Small Land, Home Buyers

The Ministry of Lands has increased the cost of valuation in the bottom end of the property market, setting up buyers for a steep rise in transaction costs. Beginning next month, it will cost at least Sh15,000 to have the smallest piece of land or cheapest home valued after Lands minister James Orengo set the amount as the least chargeable for any valuation by the government.

Brookside plans to increase its national market share of raw milk by over 6 per cent in the next twelve months. John Gethi, the firm’s general manager in charge of milk procurement and extension services, said part of the plan will include investment in milk bulking facilities at the processor’s 30 cooling stations countrywide.

6. Treasury Pleads With MPs to Pass Finance Bill 

The government has now been left at the mercy of MPs, appealing to them not to hold the collection of new taxes included in the Finance Bill 2012. The assistant minister for Finance, Oburu Oginga said yesterday that Parliamentarians are once again delaying the country from meeting the national budget plan. Oginga said the ministry has no option but to appeal to the MPs to be 'reasonable'. "We are hoping the MPs will not be unreasonable, and pass the bill as amended by the President," Oginga said.

7. Courts Hit Taxpayer with KES 11 Billion Fine

The state of Kenya’s public finances has changed for the worse after the High Court awarded a private company KES 11.4 billion against the government. Orbit Chemical Industries, a manufacturer and distributor of cleaning chemicals and hygiene solutions, won the massive award in a protracted legal tussle over the registration of a caveat on a piece of land that it bought in Nairobi.
