1. 7.7 Million Voters Not Yet Registered

The number of registered voters is edging towards the 11 million mark, with only two days to the deadline. This figure still falls short of the targeted 18 million voters by 7.7 million. The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) have announced that, as at last Wednesday, the number of registered voters had reached 10.3 million. This number is expected to increase, taking into consideration the number of voters registered during the weekend.

2. Mobile Phone Service Providers Face Heavy Penalties for Poor Service

The Information and Communications ministry is seeking heavier penalties against mobile phone operators who fail to meet the quality of service standards set by the communications regulator. The Communications Commission of Kenya (CCK) found that Safaricom and Airtel failed to meet minimum quality of service standards in the year to June and declared smaller rivals, Telkom Orange and Essar Telecom, compliant.

3. East Africa Breweries Unveils KES 4.3 Billion Plant Expansion Plan

East Africa Breweries Limited (EABL) will invest Sh4.3 billion in expanding capacity at its Ruaraka-based plant as it seeks to increase efficiency. The listed firm said the plan is one of its larger capital expenditure projects in the domestic market where it is the main player. It is the second-major investment announcement in the market coming soon after the Keroche Breweries Ltd’s Sh2.5 billion plant upgrade.

4. Mandela undergoes surgery remains hospitalized

Nelson Mandela on Saturday morning underwent endoscopic surgery to have gall stones removed, President Jacob Zuma's office said in a statement. The procedure was successful and Mandela, who has been hospitalized since last weekend due to a recurring lung infection, is recovering, the statement said.

5. Rights group holds Kenya's first gay and lesbian awards

The Kenya Human Rights Commission and the National Gay and Lesbian Human Rights Commission on Saturday launched the first gay and lesbian awards to honor lesbians, gays, bisexuals, transsexual and inter-sex people for their contributions to Kenyan society. The event, which was held at Charter Hall in Nairobi, saw politicians, employers and journalists awarded for their commitment to advancing equality and social acceptance for same-sex relationships in Kenya.

6. UN confirms record one billion international tourists in 2012.

“Today, we welcome the symbolic arrival of the one-billionth tourist,” said UNWTO Secretary-General, Taleb Rifai. Global tourism has achieved a new record as one billion tourists travelled around the world, the UN World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) has said. The one billionth tourists made the arrival December 13, 2012, the UN agency stated.

7. MPs warned over pending county financing law

Civil Society Organizations are now calling on Parliament to enact the County Government Public Finance Management Transition Bill 2012 before it adjourns. National Civil Society Congress (NCSC) president Morris Odhiambo said on Sunday that a delay in its enactment will hold up transition to county governments as there will be no immediate access to allocated resources. Odhiambo stated that governors will not readily have access to funds unless the law is passed.

8. Lobby Group Opposes Cabinet- Approved Bill

The Muslims Organisation in Kenya (Amok), a lobby group is up in arms over plans to alter a proposed law to have governors head security at the county level. Amok on Sunday warned MPs against amending National Government Service Delivery Coordination Bill 2012 to transfer the crucial docket from the national government to county chiefs.
