Thanks to the rate of technology uptake in Kenya, new innovations are being seen that are changing Kenyans' lives for the better. From mobile phone applications in the health, agriculture and business fronts to leisure and social arenas, live has been changing for the better.
All these developments have an aspect of saving costs and convenience to them. Innovators at all levels are raking their brains every day to not only change people's lives but also earn a living for themselves.
One such person is Anthony Mutua, 24 year old who has developed an ultra-thin chip of crystals that generate electricity when put under pressure. Mutua's development is designed for shoe soles and when pressure is applied when walking or running, electricity is produced.
The chip inserted into shoe soles produces electricity that can be harvested in two ways. You can either use a light low gauge cable to tap the power directly to charge your phone. Alternatively, one can make walks or jog around and then charge the phone after, because the chip has an ability to store energy which is usable afterwards.
Mutua's creation will be beneficial to people in the rural areas who have electricity problems and have to go hours on end with switched off phones when in the fields. In the wake of power outtages in the country, it could also be an important discovery for everyone in those moments when your phone blinks and you have an important call to make.
The application whose development was funded by the National Council for Science and Technology (NCST) attracts Shs. 3,800 on installation with a two year guarantee. The guarantee however does not cover when the shoe is stolen.
