Stocks Watch – 18 May 2012

At the close of trading yesterday, the NSE 20-share index stood 40.73 points up (1.12%) at 3,677.81 points to continue its upward trend. A total of 15.24 million shares were traded with an equity turnover of KES 353.58 million.

The counters we will be observing today are:

Kenya-Reinsurance: The share has continued rising in this week’s trading and yesterday it jumped 6.02% to close at KES 13.20 per share. This consistent increase in value makes it a regular Stocks Watch feature as we see how long the share can sustain this trend.

Sammer Africa: Yesterday the share registered one of the highest gains at the NSE of 6.90% to close at KES 4.65 per share. This monumental increase is extraordinary because the share rarely features in the gainers category. We will be watching this counter to see whether this was an isolated incident or whether a trend is setting up on this counter.

Kenya Airways: Yesterday the share registered the highest gain after declining in value for the better part of the last two weeks. It closed at KES 16.10, 8.42% higher than it had opened. We will continue to observe this counter over the course of next week and perhaps hypothesize on what may be causing this.
