Like football, diesel cars are a worldwide phenomenon that many people just don’t get. More than 50% of new European cars have diesel engines. Japanese models, which are common on the Kenyan market are petrol cars.
There are signs, though, that diesel cars are becoming more main stream. In an effort to make the country more aware of the existence of diesel cars, here are the pros and cons:
Pro: Diesels have more torque.
Even if you don’t know what torque is (the twisting power generated by an engine), you know the feeling of power that comes from planting your foot on the accelerator of a car with a big engine. And that’s a feeling most people like and enjoy.
Pro: Higher resale value.
At the end of your time with a car, if you can resell it for more, you’ll have paid less to own it. Diesel engine’s reputation for having better durability can help you claim more money when you sell it.
Pro: Better fuel economy and longer range.
Diesel cars have a higher fuel economy, which will prove more attractive if gas prices continue to rise. Typical diesel engines get 30 percent better fuel economy than its gas counterpart.
Pro: Diesel option is pricing.
One thing potential diesel car shopper will immediately notice is the price difference between comparable diesel and petrol versions of the same car. Selecting the petrol option can cost you more than Ksh. 170,000 or more over the diesel equivalent.
Pro: Price and availability of fuel.
In the past few decades, diesel prices have generally been lower than regular unleaded petrol. Unlike in the American markets, diesel is readily available in Kenya making it a more preferable option
Con: Limited selection of models.
The selection of diesel private car models in Kenya is quite limited. This can be attributed to the fact that most car models available on the Kenyan markets were not originally designed and marketed in Kenya. Most of them are second hand models from other primary markets.
