An Organic Investment

(This is a guest post by Kahonge, whose blog you can read here. He calls himself a culinary artist, ChefPreneur,  and AgroEcologist)

Agriculture is an art! I am not talking about the most common agricultural practices. I am talking about organic farming, as an art...the art of growing food using natural resources from cultivation to packaging. The most common agriculture today is conventional farming and also Genetically engineered farming which have all been proven to be harmful to living organisms and the environment.

Today I am not going to talk about the dangers of genetically engineered agriculture, which you can read more of on my Ag Blog. I am here to horn about organic farming, the only sustainable mode of production which has been used for millennia, being improved upon with science and technology.

Return on Investment

Many peer-reviewed scientific studies have showed that Eco-Farming (organic farming) outperforms both conventional and GMO farming in terms of yield & profits, nutritional quality and environmental impact. It’s rather obvious that if you do not use a cocktail of toxic chemicals that your food and environment will be better off.

Further studies have also proven that using heavy synthetic chemicals affect the long term productivity of any farm leading you to suffer more avoidable costs in getting more lethal and more toxic chemicals to control pests or boost soil fertility.

Initial Investment

Many people go into investments for the quick buck that is purported but the truth of the matter is that investments and/or businesses take time break-even leave alone make a profit. The same also applies to organic farming...you have to lose an arm and a leg over the costs of research, hiring, training and the usual farm overhead costs. With that said, this is the only mode of farming that you can be sure you will still be in business in the next 20 years or 200 years.

Organic foods also taste way much better than the conventionals and other GM foods and that is also another reason why you pay a premium for your stock of organics but in essence, organic food is cheaper than the others because you save on the hidden cost of avoiding expensive medical bills.
