A lecturer at the Kisumu Polytechnic has put together a movable house. The house is a single-storied construction, built with prefabricated steel and wooden fringes in the interior. Speaking to the press, Samson Alemba, who put it together with the help of other lecturers in the institution and Arc Kenya, said that the house is easy to dismantle and assemble. Even better, the house incorporates solar power, with self-contained rooms and a detachable sewage system.
This model provides a solution to middle level and low income earners whose dreams of purchasing a house have been dimmed by high interest rates on home loans. Rent prices have also been on the rise, with the current asking rate reported as 10 times compared to the one between 2010 and 2011 by Hass Consult. This design, according to Alemba, is not only convenient, but is expected to reduce the cost of construction for many.
The model is particularly fitting for those who are prone to transfers and those whose jobs keep them on the move like construction workers. “It reduces the cost of investment in housing every time one moves from one location to another”, Alemba said, speaking to The Star.
The model, which took more than one year to complete, targets the local and international market. The cost of one house is estimated at KES 3.5 million, but will vary depending on buyer specifications.
