Bonyeza Ushinde, What Safaricom Stands to Make

Safaricom Limited has unveiled its latest promotion dubbed Bonyeza Ushinde where subscribers  SMS and could win KES 1 Million, other cash prizes and airtime daily or win the grand prize of KES 10 Million.

To participate, subscribers SMS there name to the number 555 at a fee of KES 5. They will then earn points by answering a series of questions sent to them. As it is the norm, the more questions one answers, the higher their chances of winning.

The promotion kicked off on Tuesday 16TH October 2012 and is expected to end on Friday 14th December 2012; this translates to about 60 days. Let’s see how much, in total, is Safaricom giving away, and how much the service provider could make in the long run from the promotion.

In a day, one subscriber will win KES 1 Million, five subscribers will win KES 10,000, KES 5,000 and KES 2,500 and 1,000 subscribers will win airtime worth KES 100.

According to Safaricom, KES 85 Million, in total, will be given as prize money at the end of the promotion.

56 daily winners will get KES 1 Million each at the end of the promotion; four customers will scoop KES 2 Million each in a fortnightly draw, and 1015 subscribers will win KES 10,000, KES 5000 and KES 2,500 in cash prizes and airtime worth KES 100 every day. As noted above, this comes to a total of KES 85 Million in cash and airtime prizes.

According to Safaricom’s press release on its compliance with CCK counterfeit switch off deadline, the mobile service provider stated that it has 19.1 Million subscribers. If the 19.1 Million subscribers each sent one SMS, costing KES 5, to the promotion, Safaricom will generate KES 95,500,000. This is KES 10.5 Million more than what Safaricom is giving away.

Given the fact that the promotion started two days ago, it's too early to determine how many subscribers will participate in the promotion or how many SMS they will send. Safaricom has stated that 60,961 subscribers stand to benefit from the promotion.
