Closing Bell – 18 July 2012

At today’s NSE trading, the NSE 20-Share Index closed up 0.28 percent at 3,788.52 points from 3,778.10 points yesterday while the NSE All-Share Index also closed up today gaining 0.94 percent to 82.50 points from 81.73 points yesterday.

HIGHEST VOLUMES

Safaricom was today’s most traded share with 2.80 million shares moving across the counter up from 2.05 million shares yesterday. On the day the counter debuted on NSE, CIC Insurance Group was the second most active counter with 1.62 million shares traded. Uchumi Supermarkets followed with 789,500 shares while the fourth most traded share was Mumias Sugar Company with 557,200 shares traded today. Centum Investment Company was the fifth most active counter with 522,800 shares traded today.

COUNTER WATCHLIST

  • Diamond Trust Bank – On the day after the bank’s rights issue commenced, the shares closed up 1.12 percent at KES 90 up from KES 89 yesterday. The share closed up despite analyst opinions that the share could temporarily come down amidst the rights issue. Read more on that here.
  • Rea Vipingo Plantations – Shares in Africa’s largest sisal producer today maintained their highest price since December last year closing at KES 17.00. The share has shown improved performance this month, trading above KES 16.00 compared to as low as KES 14.35 in the six months to June (Bloomberg).
  • Kakuzi A day after becoming a top gainer at the NSE, the horticultural grower was today a top loser, shedding 5.00 percent of its price to close four shillings lower at KES 76 from KES 80 yesterday. Yesterday’s gain was one of Kakuzi’s biggest one-day climbs of the year.
