Closing Bell – 6 August 2012

INDICES

After declining for five consecutive days, the NSE 20 Share Index today gained 0.13 percent to close at 3,830.24 points from 3,825.08 points on Friday last week. Meanwhile the All Share Index gained 0.35 percent to close at 83.27 points from 82.98 points at the close of trading last week.

HIGHEST VOLUMES

Equity Bank was the most traded share today with 2.37 million shares up from 1.40 million shares on Friday while the second most traded share was Mumias Sugar Company with 1.59 million shares moving across the counter up from 1.10 million shares last week.  CIC Insurance Group was the third most active counter with 1.49 million shares up from 671,200 shares last week while fourth was Safaricom with 1.27 million shares down from 19.48 million shares on Friday. Uchumi was the fifth most active counter with 1.10 million shares traded today.

COUNTER WATCHLIST

  • Sasini – The share dropped to its lowest share price this month, losing 0.42 percent to KES 11.95 per share two days after the horticultural grower announced a profit warning for the 2012 year ended September. Read more on the profit warning here.
  • Safaricom – Shares in the leading technology company were top losers today, losing 2.53 percent to KES 3.85 from Friday’s price of KES 3.95. The latter was the share’s highest price of this year and it looked as though the share would top it based on Thursday and Friday’s gains.
  • Eaagads – For a fourth day today the share gained the most at the NSE. It rose another 6.06 percent to close at KES 52.50 up from Friday’s KES 49.50. This is the share’s highest price since May last year according to Bloomberg data.
