Closing Bell: How The NSE Was Today

Stock market dip wipes out billions in pension savings

Kenya Orchards  ended the day at KES 41.50 as the biggest gainer (9.93%), just as it had been in the morning. Although the number of shares transacted was the minimum possible of 100. Centum which closed at a twelve month high of KES 73.00 was second at 9.77% . Behind the two were the recently self listed NSE , CIC Insurance and HFCK bank.

At the closing bell Longhorn Kenya Limited was the largest decliner (7.89%) at KES 14.00. Behind it were logistics firm Express Kenya Limited and the Standard media group at a decline of 6.38% and 4.35% respectively. National bank of Kenya and Home Afrika followed to make the top five losers.

The biggest mover (number of shares exchanged) was Safaricom. Kenya’s largest mobile telephone operator by customer numbers saw 30.92 million of its shares change hands. Kenol Kobil was second at 4.6 million shares traded. Mumias Sugar, Cooperative bank and equity were third fourth and fifth respectively.

At 3.00pm when the market closed KPLC had the largest number of pending bids. Bids are prices quoted by prospective buyers. The bids ranging from KES 12.80 to 14.00 were yet to find a corresponding seller. The pending bids amounted to over 215,000 shares with no pending asks. Asks are the prices quoted by prospective sellers.  KPLC closed 1.75% higher at KES 14.30 having traded 177,400 shares.

The NSE 20 share index was down 0.5% to close at 5307.52. NSE all share index (NASI) was up 1.04% to close at 162.8.
