Digital Migration Opens Up For Investors

Migration from analogue TV signals to digital signals in the country has opened up businesses for many investors and still attracting new entrants in the market. Barely a month after Chinese Digital TV distributor StarTimes Media launched its services in the country, American firm Harmonic has announced plans to introduce new digital content distribution in the country.

According to The Nation, Harmonic projects that sales in Kenya will grow by 40 per cent by 2015, the international deadline for broadcasters to migrate from analogue to digital broadcasting.

Samsung Electronics East Africa announced last month that it has presented a proposal for approval to the Communications Commission of Kenya  (CCK) to distribute digital signal compliant TV sets in the country.  The Government waived import duty payable on Digital Set Top Box units in a bid to support the country’s race to embrace Digital Terrestrial Television services. The move was announced by Finance Minister, Njeru Githae, as he delivered his Budget Statement in parliament on Thursday 14th of June.

CCK acting director general Francis Wangusi had earlier indicated that Nairobi will be on full digital signal by December of this year. The current set top boxes recommended by the regulator are the DVB-T2 which replaced the initial DVB-T1 boxes that were being sold on the market.
