Residents of Nairobi have until the 31st December to switch their television sets from analogue to digital. Information Permanent Secretary Dr. Bitange Ndemo had said that December 31st shall be the last day of analogue television signal in Nairobi. Ndemo said that there will be no further delays. The switch off will be done in phases starting with Nairobi. The switch off is in line with other east African countries who will also be switching off from analogue television.
Migration from analogue TV signals to digital signals in the country has opened up businesses for many investors and still attracting new entrants in the market. Barely a month after Chinese Digital TV distributor StarTimes Media launched its services in the country, American firm Harmonic has announced plans to introduce new digital content distribution in the country.
Earlier in June this year Communications Commission of Kenya acting director Francis Wangusi told pesatalk,“We have agreed in principle that Nairobi will be the first place to switch off analogue TV signal which we hope to have completely implemented by the end of the year but we will communicate the exact timeline,” adding that the exercise will be implemented in phases, starting with Nairobi and Mombasa.
