Discounts? There's an App for that

Kenyans may soon have access to all the latest deals and discounts that retailers have to offer. A team of three young entrepreneurs is developing a mobile phone application (App) that points out price cuts to the consumer. The service, dubbed Twanga, will also help retailers clear their dead stock.

Speaking during last night’s Nairobi Startup Pitch at iHub, Twanga team leader, Gabriel Saka said that the app would point out deals to buyers looking to save some money.

The team is also comprised of Ferdinand Eloto, the developer and David Mwangi, who is responsible for logistics and design.

The group, which placed 5th in this year’s Nokia Hackathon competition, was noted as one of the event’s most promising developers.

“We’re hoping for the best,” said Mwangi, “There’s a big market out there.”

According to a report by CIO East Africa, 77% of Kenyans access the internet through their mobile phones. Mwangi stated that this was their target market. He said that their app would operate in real time, helping consumers to keep up to date on the latest offers.

Mwangi noted that the group was still working on making the app compatible with all mobile phone platforms like Apple’s iOSWindows Mobile and the Android Operating System. “We want to kick off soon,” he said shortly after the pitch. He also mentioned that Twanga was looking to recruit more members into the team. The group plans to work with major shops, supermarkets, outlets and electronic stores across the country as soon as they secure an investor.
