Kenya Power has said that the power outages witnessed in most parts of the country have bee caused by trees falling on power lines due to strong winds and heavy rains.
There were earlier claims that the power outages were stage managed by company employees who wanted to sabotage the company. Kenya power has been in legal battles with its employees who were demanding better pay.
In the wake of the heavy rains that have been pounding the country, many households have gone without electricity due to destroyed power lines and transformers. Kenya power says apart from the trees on falling on lines, the company has incurred huge loses to vandalism. It is estimated that Kenya Power has lost close to 124 transformers in the last month alone.
Vandals are charged as little as Shs 2,000 or a six month jail term a thing Kenya Power says is not effective in discouraging the vice. Kenya power was proposing fines of up to Shs 10 million with a jail term of up to 5 years.
However the power supplier has had questions to answer on the outages because this is not the first time it has rained the way it is and power outages have never been to such scales.
The heavy rains are expected to restore water levels at the main dams thus increase the level of production of Hydro Electricity which the country depends on a lot. This could see electricity bills go lower than they are with an ease on fuel charge which gets higher with diesel generated electricity.
