Over 70, 000 starving households will receive a slice of nearly £17million (KES 2.3 billion) of British taxpayers’ aid through smart cards. Households will be issued with cards credited with funds, which they will from time time to time present to designated accounting places where they will be given receipts and the money that they would wish to withdraw from their cards.
Through this initiative, every household will get just about $40 (KES 3,400) a month. This comes under the latest British government scheme to help sick, foreign youngsters. The most needy receive the cash directly from the donors, without passing through the hands of the government, thus bringing graft of these aid funds to just 0%.
Traditionally, such assistance would have involved distributing food packages to the worst hit communities, although experiences elsewhere had shown that such aid deliveries can frequently be delayed, sometimes by several weeks. But recipients of these aid have so far indicated that they would prefer to receive cash because this would allow them to decide for themselves how best to manage their own affairs.
