According to the Capital Markets Authority (CMA), the Capital Market Fraud investigation Unit (CMFIU) reported having handled 460 cases of economic and cyber crimes compared to 390 cases the previous year. This is a 20% rise in fraud cases even as the anti-fraud unit continued to make recoveries of money and shares lost through malpractice.
Of these reported cases, CMA recovered Ksh25.4 million in cash paid to clients and reinstated shares compared to 2010 when the institution recovered only Ksh7.5 million. The authority attributed the increase in recoveries to the strengthening of CMFIU, which has eleven investigators ,five more than it did the previous year.
