Friday Face-off: The Battle of the Internets

Yes. It says 'Internets' up there. As you can tell, we are big fans of LOLcats

Inspired by @Mwirigi's post on the new data bundles offered by Safaricom, we sent out one of our research bots to find out how various ISPs compare price wise. Our focus was on mobile and home internet service.

Mobile Network Operator Internet Service
While Safaricom has undeniably creamed the market for the dongle based mobile internet service, a lot of people complained that, while fast, it was extremely expensive and would not work for heavy users. Orange had made quite some traction with their KES 990 per week for Unlimited browsing before Safaricom jumped on that bandwagon with the KES 1,000 per week, or KES 3,000 per month unlimited internet access. The figure below shows how the 4 MNOs compare on their prepaid bundles:

The image above, created by Mwirigi, had an interesting work-around; for bundle sizes not offered by the provider, he combined the cheapest options to create the bundle size E.g. Safaricom does not have a 300MB Bundle so the price indicated is the cheapest combination of bundles adding up to 300MB
ie (100MB @ Shs. 200) + (200MB @ Shs. 250) = Shs. 450 as opposed to 3 x 100MB @ Shs. 200 = Shs. 600

The image below is what we got when we entered the data bundles provided and extrapolated for those bundle sizes not covered:

From both, we can see that Airtel seems to be the cheapest, with Orange coming in second, Safaricom third and, surprisingly, Yu as the most expensive.

We also looked at the major ISPs in the country, and we used their flagship products in the home internet market for the comparion; e.g. For a company like Zuku, with both WiMax and Fibre, we went with fibre as it is their primary product on offer

This image shows Zuku is, by far, cheaper with their Fibre offering.

Please note that these prices are as the time of publication and are likely to change at any time.
