The latest Energy Regulatory Commission (ERC) fuel price review saw the price of super petrol drop by KES 9.21, from Ksh 117.67 to Ksh 108.46 and diesel dropped by Ksh 8.01, from Ksh 105.51 to Ksh 97.50. This means, if your car has a 50 litre capacity petrol tank, it would initially cost you Ksh 5,883.50 to fill it up , but with the lowered prices, it now cost Ksh 5,423 to fill it up. The price difference is Ksh 460.5. Lets see how much less you will spend per kilometre with the new fuel prices
The Toyota Prius, one of the most fuel efficient cars as ranked by CNN Money, has a fuel consumption of 24 Km per liter, this means, for every kilometre a Prius covers, it consumes about 0.042 liters of petrol.
1/24 = 0.042 liters per kilometre
Let’s compare the cost of covering a kilometer using the current and previous oil prices:
From the above, the price difference for covering a kilometre is Ksh 0.38. This means, it will now cost you Ksh 0.38 less to cover a kilometer with the new fuel prices as compared to the previous ones.
4.94 - 4.56 = Ksh 0.38
In as far as the above price difference might seem small, you will still enjoy some extra mileage. Under the previous fuel price, Ksh 2,000 will get you 16.997 litres.
2,000/117.67 = 16.997 litres
If you are driving a Toyota Prius, this amount of fuel will approximately give you 404.69 Km of driving.
16.997/0.042 = 404.69 Km
Under the new prices, Ksh 2,000 will get you 18.44 litres.
2,000/108.46 = 18.44 litres
Using the same Toyota Prius, the 18.44 litres will approximately give you 439.05 km of driving. this is about 34.36 more kilometers as compared to the previous fuel price.
18.44/0.042 = 439.04 Km
The Ksh 9.21 drop in super petrol price will in deed give you some extra kilometres of driving. The amount of kilometres will though vary depending on a car's fuel consumption per kilometre.
