The Kenya National Bureau of Statistics (KNBS) has released Consumer Price Indices (CPI) and rates of inflation for the month of June 2012. KNBS generates the numbers using data collected during the second and third weeks of every month under review to get the CPI.
The CPI decreased by 0.77 % from 134.09 in May 2012 to 133.06 in June 2012. The overall inflation rate however, reduced from 12.22% in April to stand at 10.05% in May 2012. This is well in line with the KNBS earlier projections that the inflation rate will get to single digit numbers before the end of the year.
Food and Non Alcoholic drinks’ index decreased by1.91 % between May and June 2012 The drop was attributed drop in food prices in June compared to May 2012. Transport index decreased by 0.35 % over the same review period due to lower costs of petrol, diesel and public transport fares.
Energy Regulatory Commission (ERC) early this month reviewed fuel prices, lowering pump prices for super petrol, diesel and kerosene by KES 3.46, KES 2.93 and KES 3.80 per litre respectively. Super petrol now retails at KES 117.67, diesel at KES 105.51 and Kerosene at KES 83.20.
