You can now have that personalized registration plate after all. The Registrar of Motor vehicles will require you to replace worn out plates at a standard fee of KES 50,000 while acquiring a new one will cost you KES 100,000. The Transport Ministry has lifted the ban on personalized vehicle registration plates. Celebrities, politicians and businessmen wishing to have personalized number plates can now have them. This is according to a signed Kenya Gazette notice by Transport Minister Amos Kimunya last Friday.

You will be allowed to have a maximum of 7 characters in capital letters, embossed in blue with a reflective white background on the front and rear plates. For government vehicles, the registration plate will identify positions of public officers by adding abbreviations.

Owners of public service vehicles (PSVs), cargo trucks, ambulance and funeral hearse vehicles, diplomatic cars, tractors, and heavy machinery are also in a position to enjoy this new provision.
