Maternal Health Sector Gets KES 7.3 billion Funding

Kenya’s Health sector will benefit from a KES 7.3 billion funding under a Danish support programme, Health Sector Programme Support (HSPS III). This will be the 3rd phase of the programme to the Kenyan health sector. HSPS III will be launched on Thursday July 26th 2012 at The Panafric Hotel in Nairobi. The Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Public Health and Sanitation, Mr. Mark Bor and the Danish Ambassador Geert Andersen, will officiate the launch.

Kenya has one of the highest maternal mortality ratio in the world. In Kenya's Demographic profile by UNICEF in 2010, statistics indicated that 490 women died out of every 100,000 live births. Thus, HSPS III will bear a special focus on maternal mortality, with the aim of enhancing equitable access and provision of quality health care in Kenya’s health sector.

HSPS III will see to it that funds are transferred directly to dispensaries and health canters through the recently launched Health Sector Services Fund (HSSF). Essential medicines in maternal health, reproductive health and gender based violence will be supplied under this program as well.

The programme will also consolidate the areas supported under the previous health sector programme (HSPS II) namely; Primary Health Care through the Health Sector Services Fund (HSSF), Essential Medicines and Medical Supplies (EMMS) and Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights (SRHR).
