A new service, dubbed Mdundo, allowing users to download local music using scratch cards, has been launched.
Mdundo scratch cards cost KES 100, each containing a unique PIN which allows users to download 5 tracks straight to their phone. The procedure is simple:
Some of the artists whose songs are featured on Mdundo include:
P-Unit
Juliani
Collo
Octopizzo
Nazizi
Mejja
Jua Cali
Avril
Jaguar
Dolly
Kenzo
...and several more.
Mdundo scratch cards are currently available from 10 artists: P-Unit, Nazizi, Mbuvi, Octopizzo, Collo, Juliani, Alpha Msanii, Mejja, Calif Records, Jua Cali and Nazizi. You can also buy them from a sales force located along Naivasha Road. Users will soon be able to pay for the cards via mobile money.
Unlike other models of promoting local music where artists only get about 10 percent of the proceedings, Mdundo provides the artists with scratch cards free of charge. The artists get to keep 100 percent of revenue generate from their sales of the cards.
Speaking to pesatalk.com, Mdundo Head of Operations, Martin Nielsen, said, “In exchange Mdundo has the option to match the artists sales on the Mdundo platform. If Mdundo sells more music than the artist, Mdundo will pay the artist 30 percent of the revenue.”
Mdundo has been in operation for past two weeks and has had more than 300 downloads. Nielsen said that they have an advertisement agreement with Airtel. Mdundo is also in talks with several other corporates about potential sponsorship.
UPDATE 29/10/2012: Corrected facts in last paragraph. Mdundo have an advertisement agreement with Airtel. Not a scratch card manufacturing one as previously indicated.
