The price of milk has significantly gone down on the retail market a month after the rains cut the long dry spells. Milk is now retailing at between Ksh.35 and Ksh. 40 for the half liter packet down from between Ksh. 48 and Ksh. 55 in April. In December and January, a half liter packet was retailing at Ksh. 30.
The current reduction which has been informed by processors has been attributed to increase in fodder supply as a result of the April rains. In March, farmers reduced supply of milk to processors, citing low pay for the same saying the cost of fodder had remained high. Farmers thus opted to sell unprocessed milk on their own which fetched better prices. This reduced supply increased the prices on half liter packet by more than Ksh. 20 in some retail stores.
Milk Processors, New KCC and Brookside Dairies have set out a nationwide campaign in dairy farming regions for collection of milk offering farmers better prices for the precious commodity and at the same time offering better production tips. The campaigns are aimed at maintaining a steady supply of quality milk all year round.
