Ministry of Information Permanent Secretary Bitange Ndemo has said that mobile interconnection rates will be cut from Ksh2.21 to Ksh1.60 per minute. The Communication Commission of Kenya meets in two weeks time to lower this rates. According to a July 2011 report by the Consumer Federation of Kenya (COFEK), a cut in MTR rates lowers cross-network calling rates thus leading to even fair tafiffs. This should thus be good news to all mobile phone subscribers. However the approval of this rates is still controversial as some CCK board members who saught anonimity said that no meeting as such is scheduled.
Major stakeholders in the mobile telephony sector met more than two months ago on a discussion on the Mobile Termination Rates (MTR) that saw them settle on the stipulated figures. Safaricom's pre-paid customers are already making cross-network calls at Ksh4 per minute from the previous Ksh5 after this agreement was reached. This had been an offer that was to last upto July 4 but has not been reviewed and could go parmanent.
