Here’s an interesting fact about financially successful people: they tend to have a close relationship with money, they attract money, building wealth, and have somehow managed to secure their financial future. You might think this is due to pure luck, if anything; we are never really assured of our financial success, but think about it, what is luck?
As Bruce D Schneider, MCC, PhD, puts it; luck is a combination of synchronicity and talent. You have to be present to even see opportunities and know how you can take advantage of them.
A previous My Money in My Twenties featured the story of Njeri Rionge, co-founder of Wananchi Online, a leading internet service provider and she is the founder of Ignite Consulting, a business consultancy, Business Lounge, a startup incubator, Ignite Lifestyle, a healthcare consultancy and Insite, one of Kenya’s most successful digital marketing outfits. Behind all this success lies a story of a humble beginning.
As a twenty year old, Njeri Rionge first business involved selling yogurt to the International School of Kenya and Loretto Convent Msongari High School over their 10am and 4pm school breaks, from her friend’s car trunk. Throughout that period she was employed as a hairdresser with a clientele consisting largely of high net worth individuals. Unlike what most twenty year olds would do, she recognized yet another opportunity and started traveling to London on regular basis using discounted courier tickets to purchase re-sale luxury merchandise which were not available in Kenya at the time which she sold to her clients.
Back to luck and financial success, Schneider defines luck as a combination of synchronicity and talent, a situation where you are present to identify opportunities and know how to take advantage of them.
Njeri Rionges’ story is in sync with Schneiders’ definition of luck. While still in her twenties, Njeri identified money making opportunity in her employment as a hairdresser, identified a way of seizing this opportunity and in the long run ended up being financial successful.
As Schneider puts it, luck is a combination of synchronicity and talent, play your cards right and you might be financially successful.
