Oct 9 Closing Bell: BAT Leapfrogs Limuru Tea As The Priciest Share At The NSE

At the end of the day today, British American Tobacco Kenya (BAT) was exchanging at KES 942.00, making it the most expensive share at the Nairobi Securities Exchange. It overtook Limuru Tea (LIMT) which had no shares exchanged today. Its closing price therefore remained static at KES 900.00.

The winners

Kenya Orchards (ORCH), Eveready East Africa Limited (EVRD), British American Tobacco, Eaagads (EGAD) and Trans-century Limited (TCL) were the companies whose share price appreciated the most. Kenya Orchards ended the day at KES 122.00. Although, only 100 of its shares changed hands today at 1.58pm. 100 is the minimum number of shares that can be traded at a single transaction.

The losers

British-American Investments (BRIT), Olympia Capital Holdings (OCH), Car and General (Kenya) Limited (C&G), Athi River Mining (ARM) and Longhorn Kenya Limited (LKL) shed the most value today. Each ended the day at KES 29.25, 9.00, 38.50, 84.00 and  22.75 respectively. Olympia, Britam and Car and General had been among the biggest decliners today by noon. This August, regulatory findings revealed that the top shareholders of Olympia capital had transferred significant blocks of stocks. For example the deputy chairman had cut his stake from 2.86% to 1.71%.

Most shares traded

Safaricom (SCOM) , Diamond Trust Bank Kenya Limited (DTK), Kenya Commercial Bank (KCB), Mumias Sugar (MSC), and KenolKobil  (KENO) were the five most traded shares. 6.91, 2.06,1.52, 1.40 and 1.22 million shares of each were traded today. Foreign participation was at 73% compared to 27% local participation.

Indices

Both the NSE 20 share index and the NSE All Share Index (NASI) declined today. Down 0.29%, 0.14%  they ended the day at 5273.53 and 162.42 respectively.
