Kenya needs 2,000 more pilots to meet the current demand of 5,000 as the East African aviation industry complains of losing highly skilled manpower to other countries, especially Middle East. Kenya Airways is facing a shortage of pilots even as it seeks to expand its aircraft fleet from 34 to 68 within the next four years.
The cost of attaining a Private Piloting License (PPL) is KES 800,000 while that of acquiring a Commercial Piloting License (CPL) is KES 1.7 million. The estimated costs for training a traffic controller stands at KES 3.5 million while an aviation engineer takes up to KES 1 million at the diploma level.
On average a pilot takes home between KES 60,000 to KES 1.2 million at the end of the month.
