Increased supply of maize from the south Rift region and Tanzania has led to a 3.7% drop in the cost of maize flour. A 2kg packet which was going at Ksh120 is now Ksh116. In the wholesale trade, a 90Kg bag of maize which would cost Ksh3,800 is now going at Ksh3,050. "It is a sigh of relief to consumers as the price of maize flour has started to come down owing to increased supply of maize in the market", David Nyameino the Cereal Growers Association of Kenya chief executive told Business Daily.
However, Nyameino said that the prices might be pushed up again later this year. This will be attributed to the outbreak of Lethal Necrosis disease in South Rift which will consequently lead to a drop in production. The South Rift region supplies the market with 3 million bags of maize each year but this year the supply is expected to drop by half . The stocks of maize in the country will however improve in October when harvesting begins in the North Rift region.
