Private Hospitals Accept Deal from NHIF

The Kenya Association of Private Hospitals (KAPH) on Thursday said that more than 200 of its members have agreed to provide medical cover under the National Hospital Insurance Fund (NHIF) outpatient civil servants scheme.

KAPH had earlier demanded KES 6,000 per patient but on Thursday said that more than 200 of its members had agreed to offer treatment at the rate of KES 2,850 per patient. KAPH’s national coordinator John Nyaumah said that the association decided to go ahead with the lower figure as it continues with discussions on the possibility of increasing this fee.

Some of the private hospitals listed in NHIF’s updated list of accredited clinics include Nairobi’s Karen Hospital, Maria Nursing and Metropolitan. Others are Makupa Hospital in Mombasa and Elgon View Hospital in Eldoret.

NHIF is said to have paid KES 634.7 million to public and private health services providers identified to offer services in the first quarter of this year. KES 121 million was paid to public facilities, KES 69 million to mission hospitals, while the remaining KES 447 million was paid to private health services providers.
