Soon, you will be able to pay for renewal of your driving licenses using mobile money platforms. The Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) is currently working on the platform that will pave way for the implementation of the service that will aim to boost convenience while reducing congestion at KRA halls, thus enhancing easy compliance.
“In the next few months we will be able use M-PESA and the other options,” KRA commissioner John Njiraini told Capital Business, adding that KRA will also partner with all banks to roll out the same service. The taxman is still working on where motorists will be able to get the renewal stickers after paying using the mobile money services.
It costs KES 600 to renew a driving licence for one year and KES 1,400 for three years, with the maximum processing time being immediately on presentation of the driving Licence and payment fee. Following the Budget Speech by the Minister for Finance on Thursday 15th June, 2006, the Traffic Act changed as detailed in the Legal Notices Nos. 55 and 56. The changes which took effect immediately can be accessed here.
KRA earlier partnered with the National Bank of Kenya to use their branches countrywide for renewal of driving licenses. Any motorist wishing to renew their license can pay the fees and get the renewal sticker at any of the 54 NBK branches countrywide without having to visit KRA offices.
