The ongoing road expansion and improvement projects in Nairobi and around the country is a welcome move for many road users. The Thika Superhighway improvement project has attracted many Nairobi residents to move t0 estates along the road.

The road, which was known for notorious traffic jams during rush hour now has a smooth traffic flow in and out of the city. Residents of the estates along the road operated on uncertain timing to commute to and from the city something that they say has not been experienced since the road was put into use.

Commuters used to pay fares of Ksh. 80 to Ksh. 100, and Ksh. 50 to Ksh. 100 in the morning and evening respectively. That has reduced to Ksh. 60 in the morning and Ksh. 40 in the evening. This reduction in fare is expected to be realized for Rongai and Ngong residents when Langata and Ngong road expansion projects are complete.

Currently, constructions works are underway on Langata road to expand and improve the road to accommodate the increased traffic that has resulted from many people commutting to satellite towns like Ngong and Rongai.  The notoriously congested Ngong road that has been a headache for motorists heading to Karen and city center will be expanded by 2015. The project will be funded courtesy of a Ksh1.68 billion grant from the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA).

During his budget statement 2012/2013, Finance Minister Njeru Githae increased the overall budget for the Ministry of Roads to Ksh.123.6 billion, up from Ksh.104.3 billion in previous financial year.
