Road Safety Campaign on KES 31b Highway Rolled Out

Kenya National Superhighway Authority (KeNHA) has initiated a road safety awareness campaign aimed at educating the public on proper usage of Thika Superhighway.

The road show will target residents, businessmen and motorists along Thika Superhighway and its environs such as; Central Business District, Pangani, Kariokor, Roysambu, Githurai, Juja, Ruiru, Makongeni, Landless then finally Thika Town Centre.

Speaking at the flag off Kenya National Highways Authority Director General Meshack Kidenda said, “This Road show is aimed at creating awareness on road safety measures especially on the superhighway.  As we get into the festive season, I would like to urge pedestrians, motorcyclists to be cautious as they carry out their day to day activities and report traffic offenders where necessary.”

“The highway has provided sufficient capacity and considerably decreased accident rate by minimizing vehicle conflicts with traffic interchanges and by providing separate service roads for local and non-motorized traffic. We have ensured that road signage is properly installed in the right areas along the superhighway so as to ensure that road users abide by the rules that govern roads. I would like urge pedestrians to maximize the use of foot bridges that have been placed in strategic places on the superhighway.”

Traffic Rules

He further commended the government for signing into law the traffic act that is geared towards managing traffic offenses across the country. He said that this will ensure road users abide by the laws and reduce misuse of roads. Better and smarter law enforcement and public education are enough to instill some discipline on road users.

The 54 Kilometer highway was commissioned last month by president Kibaki having cost KES 31 billion, and 8 months off its targeted completion date. The initial cost for the Highway was KES 27 billion but inflation and other additional access roads pushed the cost up by KES 4 billion.
