Safaricom has pledged to give its customers improved data services. According to the company’s annual report for the year ended March 2012, data subscribers have increased by 30.9%. The country’s leading mobile phone service provider intends to improve its network quality in order to meet the rising customer demand.
“Data will continue to be a key growth pillar for Safaricom as we seek to make the internet a part of every Kenyan’s daily life,” said company Chairman, Nicholas Nganga.
Safaricom’s total revenue was up 13% to KES 107 billion from KES 94.8 billion the previous year. Internet subscribers stood at 4.6 million users by the end of 2011. The company’s CEO, Robert Collymore noted that the Bamba Unlimited data bundle played a major role in creating awareness of the content available on the internet.
The company currently has more than 2000 base stations, 54% of which are 3G enabled. Collymore said that the company will continue to upgrade its 3G network by expanding its reach and capacity. This will enable customers to browse at faster speeds as well as reduce network congestion. Nganga also noted that during the next financial year, Safaricom will ensure that its customers receive quality and reliable products and services.
