Sep 23 NSE Closing Bell: Liberty Kenya Tops Gainers As NASI Hits 12 Month High

Liberty Kenya maintained its position among the top gainers from morning to end the day 6.67% up from yesterday's closing price. The Insurer formerly known as CFC Life was second only to Kenya Orchards which gained 8.33% to close at KES 48.00. However, only 100 Orchards shares exchanged hands today. 100 is the minimum number of shares exchangeable in a trade. The other companies making up the top 5 were Longhorn Kenya Limited, Express Kenya and Standard Media Group with rises of 5.33%, 5.00% and 4.96% respectively.

National Bank of Kenya shed 5.77% to end the day as the biggest loser, followed by BAT Kenya which lost 5.20%. Uchumi declined 4.17% to end the day at KES 10.80. The decline coming at a time when there are reports that the retailer may not be able to pay its suppliers. The energy sector contributed two of the five largest decliners, with KenGen and Kenol Kobil shedding 3.85% and 3.78% respectively.

CIC Kenya ended the day with over 2 million shares in pending bids. (Bids are prices quoted by prospective buyers, and pending bids are bids that did not get a match). The bids pending bids ranged from KES 10.65 to KES 11.30. CIC closed at KES 11.85 today, with a gain of 4.64%. The fact that CIC ended the day without any pending asks illustrates the demand that was there for the share today. (Asks are prices quoted by prospective sellers). Liberty Kenya ended the day with over 300,000 shares in pending bids and no pending asks.

The NSE 20 share index was down 5377.29 down from 5406 yesterday. The NSE All Share Index (NASI) was up to an all time high of 165.45 today.
