Sep 24 Closing Bell: BAT Yesterday’s Loser Is Today’s Major Gainer At The NSE

Stock market dip wipes out billions in pension savings

British American Tobacco (BAT) Kenya rebounded from its price loss yesterday to end the day today as the second highest gainer. Its price appreciated 8.41% to KES 883. The cigarette maker was second to Kenya Orchards which rose 8.57% compared to yesterday’s closing price. However, only 100 shares of Kenya Orchards exchanged hands. 100 is the minimum number of shares that can ordinarily be exchanged in a single transaction. Liberty Kenya gained 8.16% to end the day at KES 24.50, this has been the second day in a row the counter (share) has been among the top gainers. Other good performers today were BOC Gases up 8.70% and Jubilee Insurance (2.97%).

Centum continued with the trend it had set today morning  and lost 9.09% making it the day’s  biggest loser. The self listed Nairobi Securities Exchange (NSE) closed less 6.06% today. At KES 24.75, this has been the second straight day its price has slid downwards. Insurance firms Britam and CIC which like Centum started the day on a losing note closed at  6.45% and 3.95% less respectively.

At the ring of the closing bell Safaricom Kenya Limited had the most pending bids and asks. Bids are prices quoted by prospective buyers while asks are quoted by prospective sellers. Liberty Kenya ended the day with no pending asks.

 

 

 

The NSE 20 share index declined for the second day to 5322.65.  The NSE All Share Index (NASI) went down 1.08% to 163.69.
