StarTimes Media Launches Digital TV

Digital Television signal provider StartTimes Media has today launched its digital TV services in the country. The channel which will broadcast on the new Communication Commission of Kenya (CCK) approved decoders, DVB-T2 decoders will offer over 60 digital quality entertainment channel to the Kenyan market.

StarTimes subscribers will pay Ksh. 3,499 to get a DVB-T2 decoder plus a one month's viewing on the basic StarTimes bouquet which accesses over 40 channels. The company's range of products include Basic, Classic, Unique and India whose monthly subscription ranges from Ksh. 499 to Ksh,2,499.

Mr. Leo Lee, StarTimes Media Kenya CEO stated that the new service which has launched in Nairobi will be available in Mombasa and Kisumu in early July. StarTimes intends to expand its networks and services in 11 other towns in Kenya by the end of the year and cover the whole country by 2015 in line with the country's completion of digital migration.

Currently the Chinese born StarTimes carries over 120 channels worldwide, ranging from news & commerce, movies, sports, entertainment, documentaries, lifestyle, religion, kids channels and music with presence in Tanzania and other African countries.

"We welcome and support anyone who comes to be licensed in either content distribution or any move that will help the country migrate from analogue to digital TV signal, " CCK acting director Francis Wangusi said at the launch and added that the commission is committed to seeing the migration take place as soon as possible.
