Going out to watch a movie is fast loosing taste as more Kenyans opt to spice up their home entertainment systems.

With the 3D technology gaining fast popularity we now have the option of buying a 3D TV for your home viewing, though how much would it cost to own one?

3D TV sets have a price tag of about KES 150,000 to KES 200,000. The driving force behind buying such a TV is to get the 3D experience which is only made possible by using the 3D glasses.

These TV’s only come with a pair of 3D glasses limiting the number of people who can actually get the 3D experience. You have the option of switching from 3D to 2D by the click of a button though thus would eliminate its essence of being a 3D. You have the option of buying extra 3D glasses which can retail for up to KES 1,000.

To play a 3D DVD you will need a special DVD player that comes with 3D functionality. You will most probably go for a BluRay DVD player that retails for about KES 80,000. You will also have to incur the additional costs of buying BluRay DVD's that are more expensive than the usual DVD's available in the market.

These TV’s are known to use quite a bit of power as compared to the contemporary normal CRT TV’s. A 3D TV can use between 138 watts to 300 watts depending on the screen size. A CRT TV only consumes up to 80 watts, meaning that a switch to a 3D would significantly increase your electricity bill.

However, if you can afford to buy such a screen then you can afford the slightly higher electricity bill. Though before buying one you should factor in the cost of buying a BluRay DVD player, BluRay DVD's,  extra 3D glasses and a slightly higher electricity bill.
