Whether buying a new computer, smart phone, tablet or laptop, we’re all exposed to technology in one way or another. We run to buy the “in thing” because it will keep us ahead of our peers. What we don’t know is that we’re buying medical check-ups and lifetime diseases. That blurred vision, ocular discomfort you feel when you look at your screen for long or the slight pull you ignore when you have been typing for too long could very well be the first symptoms. Though we’re not doctors, we should be able to estimate how much that itch or squint will cost a few years from now.
EYES: Tablets and smart-phones are increasing in number in Kenya and most require100% focus when keying in. Our eyes’ muscles stay positioned at the same distance for too long so any sudden movement results in a slight blur. Its not uncommon to see someone rubbing their eyes to get a clearer view. How much will this cost?
Check-up: KES 0 – 200.
Glasses: KES 3000 – 5000
Frames: From KES 5000
Least payable amount sums up to KES 8000 on the assumption that you are recommended to wear a pair of spectacles. Solutions to this are as simple as looking away from the screen once in a while and adjusting your screen’s contrast.Alternatively, one can reduce use of gadgets.
BACK, SHOULDERS AND NECK: Not many of us will use ergonomic chairs . They are designed to give support to our lumbar sections and enough padding to allow us to sit for long periods of time. Neck pains result from bad sitting postures arising from our short-term comfort needs. Rarely will we find someone siitting upright when texting or using a computer. Our shoulders bear the brunt of our poor decisions and require constant stretching since they remain immobile for relatively long periods. How much will it cost you?
Check-up: KES 0 – 2500
Unlike the former, any back, shoulder or neck pains will requires you to go for regular check-ups until the time the physician sees fit. Considering the frequency of use, that smart-phone purchased at a “discount” may be more expensive. Assuming an average of KES 30,000 spent on a gadget, it will take only 12 check-ups to pay the physician the same amount. That’s equivalent to 1 year. Stretching once in a while helps reduce chances of muscle pains and pull.
LEGS: Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT) occurs when one has been sitting or lying down for a long period of time. Blood clots form causing reduced blood flow to legs and swelling. Though it disappears with ease, DVT can always return. The prescription is an anticoagulant that will thin your blood and reduce the size of the clot. The drug can cost you up to $30 (KES 2500). One can avoid this by moving their feet while in seated position or walking around every so often.
The average number of hours spent online on mobile phones or PCs per day is 4 hours, while that purchasing a new gadget varies with individual demand. Is the time spent and health cost worth it? Then again, 4 hours is just enough time to go through PesaTalk.
