So we all know of the higher fees that will be coming with the new National Hospital Insurance Fund (NHIF) scheme, but what are the benefits? Well, one of them is the In-patient cover which is non existent in the current scheme. In addition to the current benefits, under the proposed out-patient cover, members will enjoy the following benefits:

- Drugs/medicines
- Prescribed X-rays and ultra sound diagnosis
- Treatment of Sexually Transmitted Infections
- Treatment, dressing or diagnostic testing
- Family planning
- Ante-natal and post-natal care
- Clinical counseling services
- Health and wellness education
- General consultation with general practitioners

Under the In-patient cover, members will get covered on
- Consultation fee
- Cost of treatment
- Cost of diagnostic investigations
- Hospital accommodation charges.
*Who is an out-patient? He/she is a patient who goes for treatment in an hospital or clinic but that does not require an overnight stay, that is admission.
*Who is an in-patient? Patients admitted within the hospital facility, for instance within the wards.
