The Robotic Boss

If you have a demanding and nagging boss, you will definitely be excited when he/she is away on holiday or business for a while. It is usually a cause for celebration, an opportunity to work peacefully without anyone pushing you about.

Or is it?

Microsoft is working on a robot that will allow people to be in two places at once. As reported in CNN Money, the robot comes with a pair of cameras, a high-definition display and wheels. It’s controlled over the internet by a user sitting in front of a computer with a webcam.

That setup gives the user the ability to “see” and roam around an area, and to chat “face to face” with someone standing in front of the robot.   The robot proxy’s camera can be trained to focus on an individual who is speaking, and as that person moves, the robot turns or moves along. It is believed that the robot will be able to full participate in all office affairs, from attending conference room meetings to a “walk and talk” with the staff or clients.

This got me thinking, how will this type of robot work in a Kenyan office setting, especially in one where the boss is very demanding?

Based on the fact that the robot is controlled over the internet, I’m pretty sure that the IT guys in the office will probably disable the robot’s internet connectivity, rendering the boss on the other side unable to control it, or better still; guys might lock it up in a room or pour water on it to damage it.

Let us know, will you be willing to work under the supervision of a robot?
